Thaddeus Lewis, Fendi Onobun Lead St. Louis Rams To Preseason Victory
The St. Louis Rams’ third-string quarterback, Thaddeus Lewis, came through with an outstanding drive in the final minutes to lead them to a 17-16 victory over the Tennessee Titans.
Sam Bradford and Brandon Gibson put together an 83-yard touchdown pass on the opening offensive play of the game, but it was the St. Louis Rams‘ third-string quarterback who saved the day Saturday—Thaddeus Lewis, with the help of project tight end Fendi Onobun and young wide receivers Greg Salas and Mardy Gilyard, drove the Rams end zone to end zone with minutes left in the fourth quarter to set up a 42-yard field goal from Josh Brown. The Tennessee Titans made him kick it twice with a timeout, but it didn’t matter as Brown and the Rams took a 17-16 lead with zero seconds left on the clock.
Bradford was 8-for-15 with a touchdown and an interception on the night, and while he didn’t look especially sharp the interception was on a poor play by Mike Sims-Walker. Donnie Avery caught a touchdown pass from A.J. Feeley in his first action since the 2010 preseason and looked like a possible threat downfield in Josh McDaniels’s revamped offense.
One thing Steve Spagnuolo and the Rams defense will be looking at in next week’s practices: Their defense against the run, or lack thereof. The Titans ran for 198 yards on the ground, including rushes of 46 and 29 yards.
