Rob Boras Named Rams OC: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Los Angeles Rams head coach Jeff Fisher made it official Wednesday that the team will retain Rob Boras as its offensive coordinator.

The Rams’ official Twitter account confirmed the news, as Boras remains in the fold to provide continuity and hopefully revive an offense that finished 29th in scoring last season.

An inability to light up the scoreboard, particularly due to a lackluster quarterback situation, has held the franchise back in recent years. If Boras is given a solid signal-caller to complement star running back Todd Gurley, he should have success in his first full year calling plays.  

The Rams fired Frank Cignetti Jr. this past December and promoted Boras from within for the final four games. With Case Keenum installed as the starting QB, L.A. finished 3-1, with the only defeat coming in Week 17 to the San Francisco 49ers in overtime.

Mike Groh was hired in January to be the team’s receivers coach and passing game coordinator after serving the former role for the prior three years with the Chicago Bears. It will be interesting to see how the dynamic of Groh and Boras works as they try to figure out solutions on offense.

Nick Foles failed to stand out as a potential franchise passer in 2015, leaving the Rams still unsettled at the most important position as they move to the City of Angels. Whether it’s through the draft or free agency, it’s vital for L.A. to upgrade in that area.

The open market figures to be rather thin on viable options, but the Rams may also be too far back in the draft at 15th overall to snag a starting-caliber QB. But there is considerable depth among the 2016 draft prospects, so L.A. could well land a viable player in the middle of the first round.

Also to consider is the fact Rams general manager Les Snead has two second-round picks to play with and could put a package together to move up.

The bottom line is, much of the success and failure around the NFL is likely to apply to Boras. He’ll be about as good as his quarterback is, because even a special playmaker like Gurley can only do so much without a competent passing attack.
