Los Angeles Rams to Keep Current Uniforms Until 2019

The Los Angeles Rams‘ arrival from St. Louis won’t lead to an immediate uniform change. Instead, the organization is planning to present a fresh look when it opens a new stadium in 2019.

According to Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times, Rams executive vice president of football operations Kevin Demoff confirmed there’s league protocol in place for uniform alterations. The team must submit plans between January and March before waiting two years for potential implementation.

“Our focus has always been on introducing new uniforms the year we open a new stadium,” Demoff said. “That’s the opportune time to shape your brand.”

Using that timeline, the Rams have another year for planning what type of changes they want to make before submitting the proposal to the league in early 2017.

Demoff told the Los Angeles Times he’s not a huge fan of the current look.

“I don’t particularly love our current uniforms—I know there are a lot of fans who feel that way,” Demoff said. “But the thing that makes the most sense is to keep them in place for now.”

He added: “The good news is our fans don’t lack passion or input on the uniforms, so when we go to ask for it over the next year, I expect that same passion to come through.”

Arash Markazi of ESPN.com believes an overwhelming majority support the change:

The Rams have been utilizing a gold, blue and white look in St. Louis, and it sounds like that will remain the same for at least a couple more seasons. They did have a throwback alternate jersey with a blue and yellow base, but it’s unclear whether they will use it or save those colors for the new uniforms.

It’s also a smart move from a financial perspective, of course. Many fans from the Rams’ new home won’t want to wait three years in order to get a jersey or gear, so they will stock up on the current merchandise and then likely come back for the new stuff in 2019.

As always, the toughest part of coming up with a new design is finding a way to give it a unique, updated vibe while still paying homage to the old jerseys. That’s what the team is tasked with figuring out over the next 10-12 months.

So while there’s still a period of transition to complete, when the Rams open their new stadium, it will be full-speed ahead in every area, including the on-field look.
