2013 NFL Mock Draft: Tavon Austin could give the Rams a big play threat

With the 2013 NFL Draft approaching, fans of the St. Louis Rams are likely looking at what the team can gain on offense. SB Nation’s latest mock draft has the Rams selecting Tavon Austin in the first round, giving St. Louis an extremely versatile threat on offense.

Austin put up some decent numbers in his final year at West Virginia (top 15 in total yards and yards per game, top 10 in touchdowns) but the stats don’t tell the whole story. As Rams blog Turf Show Times noted, the Rams have a serious need for explosive players, and Austin has big potential as a playmaker. SB Nation’s scouting report breaks down why: he can line up all over the field, he can move after the catch, and with eight kickoff returns of 30+ yards in 2012, he’s a multi-dimensional threat. His size is a drawback (he’s listed at 5’9) but small men have made things work at wide receiver.

The Rams have eight total picks in the 2013 draft, one in each of the first six rounds and two in the seventh. Starting off with Tavon Austin would bring a lot of talent and potential to the class.
