2013 NFL Mock Draft: Rams targeting a receiver with 1st pick?

The St. Louis Rams have decisions to make in regards to upcoming unrestricted free agent wide receivers Danny Amendola and Brandon Gibson. While rookie Chris Givens led the team with 698 yards receiving, the other two weren’t far behind: Gibson at 691 and Amendola at 666, though with Amendola that total came in just eleven games. Should those two be allowed to walk, St. Louis will have two major holes to fill.

That becomes especially true if 2012 second-round pick Brian Quick, who had 11 catches for 156 yards last season, doesn’t step up.

If Amendola and Gibson leave, there would be a good chance that the Rams will use one of their first-round picks on a receiver in April’s NFL draft. Dan Kadar of Mocking the Draft thinks the same thing, projecting Cal WR Keenan Allen to the Rams with the 16th overall pick:

Allen gets the nod here over players like Tyler Eifert or Cordarrelle Patterson. He’s often overlooked after missing a lot of his junior season, but Allen projects as a No.1 wideout because he has speed, size and solid hands.

Even if the Rams do re-sign Amendola, they will still need more depth on the outside. There is no telling if Quick will improve next year or if Givens will continue to get better or take a step backwards, and Sam Bradford desperately needs more weapons. It doesn’t matter where they come from at this point. In this case, Allen would be a great addition in the draft should he be available when the Rams are on the clock.
